Arduino Portenta Mid Carrier: specs and pinout

Carrier board for Portenta C33, H7 and X8 modules. It breaks the high-density signals out to 2.54 mm headers and adds Ethernet, USB-A, microSD, CAN, Mini PCIe and camera connectors.

Rows are copied from the connector tables of the official datasheet (ASX00055): J4 screw terminal, J14 and J15 breakout headers, J3 JTAG/SWD, J11 DVP, J13 USB-A and J12 microSD. Net names and high-density pin numbers are as printed; typos in the table are noted on the row. The J8 Mini PCIe, J16, J18 RJ45 and J19 display tables are not listed here; read them in the datasheet (section 4.3). J14 pin 7 has no row in the datasheet table.

• Wired temperature and humidity logger: The carrier gives the H7 an RJ45 port and a microSD slot. The DHT22 runs from 3.3 V to 6 V, so it can use a J15 VCC pin (3.3 V) with its data line on a GPIO pin. Check the module's pin order on its silkscreen. Learning project.
• Ethernet potentiometer web page: J15 exposes A0 plus the 3.3 V VCC and GND pins on one header, so the potentiometer's outer pins go to VCC and GND and the wiper to A0, keeping the input at or below 3.3 V. The carrier supplies the RJ45 port; power and programming come over USB-C.
• microSD knob logger: The carrier's microSD slot (J12) is wired to the H7's SD interface. The potentiometer's ends go to J15 VCC (3.3 V) and GND, the wiper to A0. Power and programming come over USB-C.

Common mistakes

• Connecting a 5 V supply the wrong way round: the IN 5V pins of the J4 screw terminal and the J15 header have no reverse polarity protection (source: Arduino official documentation p.13-14)
• Expecting CAN0 to work on its own: CAN0 has no CAN transceiver, so an external one is needed; the onboard transceiver serves CAN1 on J4 and is switched with DIP switch SW2 (source: Arduino official documentation p.6)
• Plugging a MIPI camera into J10 with a C33 or H7: MIPI cameras are supported only by the Portenta X8; the DVP connector J11 takes Arducam DVP modules (source: Arduino official documentation p.6-7)

Not covered by the official source

• The datasheet states no maximum current for the J4 or J15 5 V inputs.
• J15 pin 10 prints high-density pin J2-53 for SPI0 CS, which looks like a typo for J2-35; the row says so.
• J14 pin 39 prints net GPIO_0 for GPIO1 and pin number 37 appears twice; both are noted on the rows.
• The J8, J16, J18 and J19 connector tables are not transcribed.
