Chip pins
These are the pins of the chip on the module, from the chip datasheet. The module's own header may label or expose them differently.
Pins above are the bare VL53L1X (LGA12) pins. The breakout board (on-board regulator, level shifting, pull-ups, header order) is not covered by an official document.
| Pin | Function | Voltage | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AVDDVCSEL | VCSEL supply, to be connected to main supply | Pin 1 | source Table 2 (p.5) | |
| AVSSVCSEL | VCSEL ground | Pin 2 | source Table 2 (p.5) | |
| GND | Ground | Pin 3; GND2 pin 4, GND3 pin 6, GND4 pin 12 | source Table 2 (p.5) | |
| XSHUT | Xshutdown pin, active low | Pin 5; 10 kOhm pull-up recommended | source Table 2 (p.5); notes (p.6) | |
| GPIO1 | Interrupt output, open drain | Pin 7; leave unconnected if unused | source Table 2 (p.5); notes (p.6) | |
| DNC | Do not connect, must be left floating | Pin 8 | source Table 2 (p.5) | |
| SDA | I2C serial data | Pin 9 | source Table 2 (p.5) | |

Build with it
Project ideas for the VL53L1X distance sensor. Each link opens Soldr with the prompt filled in; Soldr assigns the pins, checks power and shows how to wire every part.
- Distance display: The chip's supply (AVDD, 2.6-3.5 V) is separate from its I/O level: the default I/O mode is 1V8 and 2V8 mode must be set by the driver. 3.3 V I2C therefore needs a breakout that handles it or the driver's 2V8 mode; the breakout is undocumented here.
- Parking distance beeper: A learning project, not a safety device. The sensor's range is shorter under strong ambient light.
- Pico distance readout: Pico I2C pins are 3.3 V. The chip's I/O mode defaults to 1V8 (2V8 mode is set by the driver), and the breakout's level handling is undocumented, so check that before wiring. Learning project.
Common mistakes
- Powering above the chip limit: AVDD recommended range is 2.6-3.5 V and absolute maximum is 3.6 V, so a bare chip must not be fed 5 V (source: link, Tables 13-14)
- Leaving XSHUT unmanaged: the sheet says XSHUT must always be driven (pull-up needed if the host does not drive it) and raised only when the supply is on (source: link, notes under Table 2)
- Expecting full range in strong light: under strong ambient light long mode reaches 73 cm (source: link, Table 4)
Not covered by the official source
- Breakout board not covered by an official document.
- Newer ST revisions may exist; the ST site refused the download, so a a hosted copy of Rev 3 was used.
- The sheet writes 0x52 as the device address and does not state a 7-bit form; 0x29 is derived.
- Chip I/O (IOVDD) defaults to 1V8 (recommended operating conditions, note 4); 2V8 mode is set by the driver. How the breakout handles I2C levels is undocumented.
