## Pinout

Pin names and numbers are copied from the J8 connector on the official Raspberry Pi Zero W reduced schematic (page 1). The schematic marks J8 as DNI (not fitted) because the standard Zero W ships without the header; this listing is the pre-soldered version, so the header is fitted. Alternate names in brackets are the schematic's own labels. The schematic does not state 5 V tolerance of the GPIO pins, so none is claimed.

## Build with it
Project ideas for the Raspberry Pi Zero W (pre-soldered header). Each link opens Soldr with the prompt filled in; Soldr assigns the pins, checks power and shows how to wire every part.

- [Room temperature and humidity logger](https://app.soldr.ai/?prompt=I%20want%20to%20build%20a%20room%20temperature%20and%20humidity%20logger%20with%20a%20Raspberry%20Pi%20Zero%20W%20and%20a%20DHT22%20sensor): The DHT22 module is a digital sensor, so it needs no analog input (the Zero W header has no ADC pin). Use the sensor's own datasheet for supply and wiring.
- [Pi status display](https://app.soldr.ai/?prompt=I%20want%20to%20build%20a%20small%20status%20display%20that%20shows%20the%20IP%20address%20and%20CPU%20load%20with%20a%20Raspberry%20Pi%20Zero%20W%20and%20a%200.96%20inch%20OLED): The OLED talks I2C on header pins 3 (SDA1) and 5 (SCL1), which already have 1.8K pull-ups to 3V3 on the board. Power it from pin 1 (3V3) and a ground pin.
- [Wi-Fi connected indicator lights](https://app.soldr.ai/?prompt=I%20want%20to%20build%20a%20set%20of%20indicator%20LEDs%20driven%20by%20a%20Raspberry%20Pi%20Zero%20W%20that%20show%20whether%20the%20Wi-Fi%20link%20and%20a%20script%20are%20running): Each LED goes from a GPIO pin through a series resistor to ground on the breadboard. Learning project for GPIO output; the Zero W has built-in Wi-Fi so no extra module is needed.

## Common mistakes

- Using a standard camera cable: the brief says the Zero needs a special camera cable ([source](https://www.farnell.com/datasheets/3626548.pdf))
- Using a full-size HDMI cable: the board has a Mini HDMI port ([source](https://www.farnell.com/datasheets/3626548.pdf))
- Using pins 27 and 28 (ID_SD, ID_SC) as normal GPIO: the schematic says they are for an ID EEPROM only and to leave them unconnected otherwise (source: [link](https://datasheets.raspberrypi.com/rpizero/raspberry-pi-zero-w-reduced-schematics.pdf), page 1 note)

## Not covered by the official source

- Power input voltage and typical current are not stated in the product brief.
- 5 V tolerance of GPIO pins and per-pin current limits are not stated in the schematic or brief: not claimed.
- Brief specs are from the a hosted copy of the product brief.
